Ways to Improve a Chipped Tooth
Posted by Fernando Tordoya of

Most dental patients experience a chipped tooth at some point during their lifetime. Many experience wear in a specific part of their tooth, which becomes weakened until it chips. In other cases, you may bite down too hard on food, which causes teeth to chipped. Several options are available for patients looking to resolve this problem. These include dental bonding, crowns, and porcelain veneers.

Dental Bonding helps repair the damage of chipped teeth in as short as a single office visit. They are also known as fillings, and they fill in missing tooth enamel using a resin that resembles a natural tooth. The process is painless and rarely requires numbing medication. The chipped area is etched to help the bonding material adhere securely. After the adhesive material is applied, the composite resin is shaped onto it to restore the natural tooth shape.

For larger chips, patients may require a crown. This a cap that covers the tooth root and is shaped to appear like a tooth. They are developed with material designed to last for a long time. They can be created from metal, porcelain fused-to-metal, resin, or ceramic. For most cases, two office visits are required to install a crown. The visits may also involve X-rays or a root canal treatment.

Another option available to patients are porcelain veneers. These are thin shells composed of porcelain material and are applied to cover the front surface of the tooth. A single repair can help repair a single chip on an individual tooth. They not only help repair chips, but also conceal gaps, misalignment, stains, or other aesthetic features.
